Volunteer event photographer (corrected***)
Pink Day is when World Breast Cancer Awareness Day is commemorated. Its objective is to sensitize women to the importance of practicing the breast self-exam and of early detection. The foundation “Fundacion Hemato-Oncologos” holds Pink Day to honor those who have been affected by the disease and to raise awareness in Colombia. I was a Pink Day volunteer to photograph the event; the pictures were published in local newspapers and used by the foundation for archival and advertising purposes. Participating in this event was a very enriching experience because I was able to share with not only women, but men as well who have survived, or were currently fighting against, any type of cancer. Their showing of strength in times of adversity taught me to be stronger and a more grateful person.
Treatment Shelter ( 2014) (corrected***)
I volunteered in the same foundation a couple of years later as a summer intern. My duties included translating the foundation’s page to English and translating the director’s web page and resume as well. However, one of the most important projects I worked on was designing a treatment shelter for patients with cancer and low economic resources. The foundation ran a 5K race event, as a part of their Pink Day, to collect money to buy and renovate a shelter for those who have cancer but, due to the economic constraints, could not attend their treatment sessions and consultation appointments. I was therefore in charge of outlining the plans for the shelter, such as the rights and duties of the patients, the rules to be followed inside the shelter, and other administrative details that such a project entails. The proposal was then presented to the manager and director of the foundation, and this initial ideas were taken into account.
