Gaitan is a community for which I have volunteered since I was in seventh grade; they were recipients of the box of love project and were benefitted by flea markets that my high school organized for them. One year, I volunteered to help with their First Communions. In Colombia, Catholic religious events are a big part of our culture. For example, celebrating the First Communion of our children is a very elaborate ceremony. Our community came together to help organize this event and make sure it was just as special for the children at Gaitain as it was for us. My duties as a volunteer were serving food, entertaining the children, and photographing the event.
